The Chicken Farm takes Flight

Well, it has begun. The first steps in our family becoming more self-sufficient have been taken.. Wednesday we bought 100 chicks; 90 for poultry, 10 for laying. The yellow chicks should be ready to butcher in about 10-12 weeks. The hens will be producing by the end of the summer (hopefully). If anyone needs eggs, let me know. Our hens should produce roughly 3000 eggs per year. (That's 250 dozen for those of you trying to do the math.) So far, so good. We have had no chicken deaths! Not bad for a girl who has no clue what she is doing!! Next project........ building a chicken coop!

  1. They are so cute!!! Are you going to be able to butcher them when the time comes...? I don't know if I could do it :) My husband's family had chickens when he was growing up. His mother loved sending the kids out to get the eggs in the morning.

  2. Those little chicks are the cutest! I'm sure when the initial adoration is over, the kids will curse you up and down for making them take care of all those! If I ever need to learn how to raise chickens or knit, I know where to go! Does this mean that I should be raising something on all my acres? Oh wait, I'm raising, 5 kids and a husband! ha!
